Eden Atenas – B&B Eats in Costa Rica
Eden Atenas is a small B&B that is a great place to relax and enjoy the beauty of Costa Rica. It’s in a small town away from the hustle and bustle of San Jose. The owners are originally from Canada and they have made this place a little piece of paradise. If you’re a foodie you will definitely enjoy Jan’s breakfasts. Always unique and always delicious.
I was lucky to be at this B&B during the slow season in December and although it was rainy when the sun came out their place was a joy to just sit back and relax on a hammock or in a rocking chair. The sunsets, views, grounds and their two sweet German Sheppards made this quaint, simple B&B a great place to enjoy some solitude.
The breakfast was always at the rear of the house on their veranda with an amazing view of their garden. Fresh fruit, fruit juice and Costa Rican coffee were a staple for every breakfast. It was always a pleasant surprise to be served our morning breakfast at Eden Atenas. Before my arrival at Eden Atenas, they had asked me if I had any food preferences or allergies. I had mentioned that I love fresh fruit like mangoes, papaya and pineapple and Jan did not disappoint. Not only did I have fruit every morning on my three-day stay but, she made unique fresh fruit juices each day.
I think she could have been a chef in addition to her amazing gardening and landscaping skills. My first morning there I enjoyed two types of crepes. One with mango and raspberries and one with a pulled beef with a sweet almost kalbi (Korean Short Ribs) like flavour. She also had made a fresh coconut whipped cream to add to her breakfast creation. It was delicious. The mango pineapple soursop fresh juice was also a perfect complement to my sweet and savoury morning dish.
My next breakfast was just as impressive as the first. It was a breakfast taco with chorizo, avocado and topped with a perfectly fried egg. The fresh coriander was a nice additional topping as well. The fruits were plentiful and served like a well-architected dish that you almost didn’t want to devour. There was also a yoghurt parfait that was a nice sweet addition to the meal. Not only did we get to enjoy great food here but the fluttering hummingbirds, butterflies or birds visiting the garden were a common occurrence throughout the day here.
On my last day, the morning meal just got better. We had a breakfast pizza with vegetables on one half and salami on the other with goat cheese. It was an egg masterpiece and tasty. The fruits were plentiful as usual and also included a freshly baked fruit bread. Coffee was always topped up and it was a great way to start your day with a full stomach and a good meal.
You have to visit this place to truly appreciate the food, the views and the serenity of this B&B in Costa Rica. It’s simple, quaint and not a five-star accommodation but, as a foodie and not one to need to stay at a 5-star hotel this was the perfect place to relax and enjoy what Costa Rica has to offer. For my first visit to Costa Rica, I’m glad I chose this little gem to introduce me to this beautiful Central American country.
