This Korean restaurant is not very big and it is located in a small plaza in North York. It is modern and clean inside. Their menu options are fairly large and their food seems authentic. As is tradition for many Korean restaurants, Koryo Samgyetang gives you a set of small side dishes that you can nibble on before and with your meal. The Banchan (aka side dishes) were mostly pickled items and also included an interesting green salad topped with a black sesame dressing which I’ve never seen as a side dish in a Korean restaurant before.
I was a little disappointed that the staple, Kimchi, was not one of the 6 side orders and their service was not that great that evening for my first visit here. The staff were chatting in a booth with each other and the restaurant was not that busy during this weekday. Unfortunately, they weren’t very attentive except when bringing my friend and me our dishes. Luckily the food was good and flavourful to make it worth the lack of good service.
I tried the Hot Stone Spicy Pork DupBap which is a rice dish that comes with sliced soft pork marinated in sweet spicy sauce and topped with sesame seeds, broccoli and a small piece of egg. My friend tried their Hot Stone Kimchi Fried Rice which came with fried rice with kimchi, vegetable, pork and a fried egg. Both came in a hot stone bowl and a small side order of chicken broth soup. They did not have the purple rice option at this Korean restaurant. However, the white rice was cooked perfectly because it was nice and crispy from the heat of the bowl. The chicken broth soup was also nice to drink on this rainy evening.
My friend enjoyed her dish and I liked the sweet and spicy flavour of the pork main dish that I tried. Despite the mediocre service that evening I would go back here to try additional Korean dishes. The decor in the restaurant is simple and clean and their food seemed fresh and made to order.
