Shatter Abbas Express – Persian Restaurant Takeout

This little restaurant used to be Burger Hut and I believe it has only been open a few months. I was visiting another store in the area and noticed this new restaurant and was pleased to see that the burger place was replaced with a Persian/Iranian restaurant.

Shater Abbas Express has a variety of kebab options, many of which I did not recognise the name in the menu but not to worry there is an English description beneath each name in the menu. I decided to try their Koobideh Kebab which comes with two skewers of chef’s lamb and beef special ground mix. All the entrees come with basmati rice and BBQ tomato unless you prefer Persian flat bread.

The Kebabs looked like they were fresh. The owners/staff were speaking Persian fluently and the food was made to order which was great. If you are in a rush you may want to call for takeout in advance as you could be waiting a while depending on how busy they are. The restaurant is small, clean and the seating is limited inside with only enough seating for about 10 people. They do have an outside patio with a bit more seating but, as the weather is cool now in Toronto it’s probably best to get takeout like I did anyway.

It was interesting to see them cooking the kebabs right on the flames of the grill and fanning the flames with a piece of cardboard. I’m sure the cook was feeling the heat.

Their portions are very generous and the patrons who ate in were actually given their food in the takeout containers and used plastic utensils. This place isn’t fancy but, the food was good. The staff spoke English and could have been a bit warmer to their customers but, I much prefer great tasting food to great service especially when I’m getting takeout anyway. The takeout also came with whipped butter and a small packet of seasoning called Sumac. The butter melted inside the hot food container and I decided to pour it over my basmati rice and the kebabs. The Sumac seemed like a nice addition of spice that I just sprinkled on my food.

I would go there again to try their other kebabs and maybe their various combos but, I’m a little surprised they have Rotisserie Chicken, Special Pulled Chicken, Steak & Cheese sandwich, hamburger and hot dog options on their menu. I guess they decided to provide some Canadian choices.

Good flavourful kebabs, generous portions and I enjoyed the sweetness of the fresh grilled tomato. The container is quite large and you don’t have to worry about how much rice you’ll have as it is enough for 3 people/servings easily. Made to order is the best but, it may not be as express as you need it to be.
