My friend and I went to grab a late lunch at Moxie’s before a movie. Moxie’s Grill and Bar is a franchise and this one is located conveniently in Fairview Mall. It has a lot of seating in their lounge or dining area.
The atmosphere is similar to many chain bar and grill environments. The dining area is quite dim during the afternoon and there aren’t a lot of windows at this location. We did get a spacious booth that was comfortable and service was quite good. Surprisingly the brunch menu was still available at 2 p.m and it was actually quite chilly in the lounge area because their air conditioning was still on.
We were pretty hungry so, we ordered an appetizer along with our burgers. The appetizer was Calamari with tempura shrimp, sriracha aioli & sweet chili sauce. The calamari was very good (not too salty, not overly battered or oily) and it came with a few additional ingredients that complimented the dish nicely (lightly battered jalapeno peppers and candied ginger). The jalapenos were not very spicy because most of the seeds were missing. The candied ginger however had a kick and it looked like it may have been deep fried Japanese pickled ginger (pink in colour). I think the dish would have had more flair in presentation if they were actually cooked like shrimp tempura as they do in Japanese restaurants but, it was tasty none the less.
Their burger servings are generous and we both opted for sweet potato fries. I tried the Blackened Chicken Burger (crisp pancetta bacon, American cheddar, roasted garlic mayo, toasted sesame broiche). The bread for the chicken breast burger was fresh and toasted with a little baby pickle pierced on top. Unfortunately the pancetta bacon was not very crispy and the chicken was lacking the spiciness of blackened chicken but it was still flavourful with the bacon and garlic mayo.
My friend tried the Loaded Backyard Burger that included aged white cheddar, mozzarella, sautéed mushrooms, bacon & barbeque sauce. The gluten free bread that she opted for is a nice option for those who have gluten allergies or diet restrictions. The bun was bit small for the large burger patty and it got a bit messy but, in a good way (from the juices of the burger).
All in all it was a good lunch from Moxie’s. I don’t frequent this restaurant much, however I have never had bad food or service the few times I have been here for lunch or dinner with friends. The menu also has enough variety to please almost anyone.
