Juicing for the Health Conscious – Green is Good

I decided to try juicing after watching a documentary Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. It was about a man who juiced for 60 days to see if it would alleviate some health issues he had and improve his overall health and weight. I thought it was interesting although a bit drastic and wanted to see how easy it was to make the juice and how it really tasted drinking the green juice.

Luckily, I had an old juicer and was able to just buy a few ingredients to try this out. I must say this combination of ingredients turned out tasting pretty good despite it looking very green.

If you’re like me I like things sweet tasting and the apple in the juice definitely helps make the juice taste better. I also liked the fact that you don’t need to add any sugar and it’s all natural.

I tried a couple different recipes and both tasted much better than I thought they would considering I was drinking spinach!

My first attempt at Green Juice recipe made about one cup of juice.

1 Apple cored

1 handful of Spinach

Ginger (about 1/2 inch peeled)

1/2 a Cucumber

My second attempt at the recipe I just tried adding carrots. I only had baby carrots but, I think the large carrots would juice much better.

Recipe 2 included this and will make approximately 2-3 cups of juice:

3 Apples cored

4 handfuls of Spinach

1/2 cucumber

2 carrots/20 baby carrots

Ginger (about 1 inch peeled)

I did find that drinking home made fresh juice was much tastier than the artificially sweetened stuff but, a lot of veggies and fruits need to be added to make a limited amount of juice. Juicing could get expensive if done everyday like the guy in the documentary that drank juice throughout the day for every meal for 60 days. But, for someone who just wants to try it occasionally I do think that it could be a good way to get your daily fruits and vegetable intake all in one drink. I have to admit it is pretty fun to use the juicer too, except for cleaning the machine after.
